Councilman: Indoor Tennis Facility Most Wanted Recreation Option ...

Column as submitted by Toms River Councilman John Sevastakis:

Now that the winter is coming to a close which we deserved comparing to the past two winters, spring is in the air. Many plans have been made through the recreation department for the upcoming season in the township.?

Beach maintenance has been underway all winter and we are looking for another successful season at the beach and the township pool at Snug Harbor.

The recreation committee has some new faces from many of our local sport group clubs to the new council representatives, Alfonso Manforti (Ward 4) and Jeffrey Carr (Ward 3) both new to the council. Councilman Manforti and Carr replace Councilwoman Maria Maruca and Councilman Maurice Hill who have worked very hard since 2003 on the committee and were very instrumental in all the recreational projects we have completed and have in the works.?

Currently there are ten recreational items on the Township's website [Editor's Note: here is the survey] that have been voted by our residents in a priority order with an indoor Tennis Facility at the top with a Spray Park and passive recreation rounding out the top three.

The Council will be conducting a feasibility study with the assistance of a newly formed Indoor Tennis Facility advisory panel that will be formed by our Administration with members from our community, professional and assistance from others with expertise in this area.?

The recreation committee is also in the process of updating the recreational needs list to be placed on the web site for our residents to vote as they do now.?

The girls softball complex is coming to completion and will be a much needed in our community for many years to follow. Although there may have been some negativity towards this project by a couple of residents over the past year, I believe that this will be one of our marquis complexes that we have in our community that will be utilized by all of our girl softball players.?

The Council will be looking to fill two open positions on the Recreation Committee that have been recently added/redefined, golf representative and tennis representative.? If there is any interest by anyone in our community, please forward your information to the Townships Clerks office to my attention.

Finally, I would like to congratulate BJ Clagon Jr. from the High School South Wrestling Team becoming the first state champion from HSS since the late Darnell Meyers in 1984. BJ who is a Junior (138 weight class) pinned his apponent in less than a minute on March 4?in Atlantic City ?Boardwalk Hall Convention Center.

BJ and his family will be honored by the Mayor and Council in an upcoming Town Hall council meeting along with 2nd place finisher Kenneth Theobold (145), Kevin Corrigan 5th place (113) and Matthew Theobold 3rd place in the Regionals all from High School South.? Richie Lewis from High School East (132),? placed first in the Regionals and placed 5th at the states.?

We are looking forward to a great spring season and wish all of our residents good health and happiness.?
