Olloclip for the iPhone 5 Review

OVERVIEW

If colored filters for your iPhone photos aren?t enough for you what?s the next step? Tweaking the lens. And that?s exactly what the Olloclip for the iPhone 5 does. The Olloclip was originally a Kickstarter project that was started by Patrick O?Neill of Huntington Beach, California. Looking for a goal of $15,000, O?Neill and his team were able to raise $68,201. We?ve looked at a few lens/filter covers for the iPhone and wanted to give the Olloclip it?s time in the limelight.

UNBOXING

The Olloclip is a ?quick-connect lens solution.? There no moving parts or batteries needed. In the box you receive the product, instructions, lens covers and the wide angle lens. To attach the wide angle lens, you screw it onto the macro lens. The Olloclip is light weight, fits in the palm of your hand and isn?t too big to carry in a front pocket. Also, it should be noted that the Olloclip is available for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 and they come in white, red or black. Obviously, we got the black.

FEATURES

There are apps that mimic fish eye lens and macro shots but?imitation is no replacement for the real thing. The fish eye lens is 180 degrees field of view and gives you a very rounded view of the world. To get to the macro lens, turn the Olloclip around and voila, it?s ready for shooting. The macro lens is up to 10 times larger than normal view so great for those up close and personal shots. But if you want to take a shot of something that doesn?t seem to fit in the frame, the wide angle lens (which screws onto the macro lens) is double the normal view. The unit itself is constructed of strong materials. It doesn?t feel brittle and probably won?t break easily.

SET UP

As mentioned before, there?s no 3rd party app to use in order for the Olloclip to work. However if you do want to do use the fish eye lens with a black and white filter, it?s quite fun to mix and match. But really, there?s little to no?setup?required. The biggest issue I came?across?was having to remove my phone case. I cannot have a ?naked? phone; all of my phones are protected by something. However, cool gadgets like the Olloclip are very intriguing and work ?very well; except it?s a huge hassle to remove the case if I want to use it. This was the same issue I had with the Trygger clip for the iPhone 5. But the unit was very easy to attach and remove. It fit onto the iPhone snuggly, didn?t feel like it would come off accidentally and but it does cover the power button of the iPhone. It would be nice if I could attach these lens to a case somehow so I wouldn?t have to keep taking off and putting back on my phone case.

It makes the iPhone look strange with these 2 lenses sticking out on either side of the phone. But it?s so easy to remove and replace so you only use it when you need to. Also, using the lens with video proved to be no problem at all. But when I wanted to use the macro lens, I found it a tad bit cumbersome. Screwing the wide angle lens off and on was easy, but really, I?m not going to remember to use the little pouch to keep it safe. What happens if and when I lose the wide angle lens? And what about the lens covers for that matter? Aside from that, using the Olloclip with my phone have made it a lot more fun to take photos. Here?s how they turned out.

The lenses work great in low light conditions as well.

If you really love taking photos with your iPhone, I recommend this accessory for you. If you?re not a huge photophile, the Olloclip might turn you into one. The biggest issues we came across were the removal of the case and easily losing the wide angle lens. But as long as you remember to bring the Olloclip?s pouch and you don?t have any holes in your pockets, you should have no problems. The Olloclip is a fun gadget for the iPhone and you can get yours at BiteMyApple today.
