Singer Emeli Sande eyes U.S. market after setting UK chart record

By Rollo Ross

LONDON (Reuters) - Scottish singer-songwriter Emeli Sande scored a new chart record on Sunday with her debut album after a stellar year in Britain that has paved the way for her next challenge - the U.S. market.

Sande smashed a record held for nearly 50 years by The Beatles when her debut album, "Our Version of Events", hit its 63rd week in the top 10 of the UK album charts, according to the Official Charts Company.

The Beatles previously held the record for the debut album spending the most consecutive weeks in the top 10 with "Please Please Me" racking up 62 weeks in 1963 and 1964.

"It feels quite surreal to even have your name mentioned in the same sentence as The Beatles," Sande, 26, told Reuters television.

"For a record to stay there for so long it means that people have connected with it so that's how I'm enjoying celebrating this record."

The release of "Our Version Of Events" in February 2012 kicked off a year of successes for Sande who sang at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics and won best British female artist and best album at the BRIT Awards.

Sande also notched up three No. 1 singles in the UK with "Read All About It" with Professor Green, "Next to Me", and "Beneath Your Beautiful", a collaboration with Labrinth.

Now the former medical student has set herself a new challenge, tackling the U.S. market, where she has yet to make a name for herself.

Her single "Next To Me" is currently 46th in the Billboard Hot 100 chart and she is in the United States this month to promote her album.

"I'm really excited about taking music over to the States because it's a brand new challenge," she said.

"There's different formats over there so you have to understand the market, the people, you really have to take into account how massive the place is .. It's a brand new adventure and it's chapter two of this whole big thing."

Sande is the first to admit that the past year has been extraordinary but she is aware that she needs to keep building from her debut album that was Britain's best-seller last year.

"So many things I've dreamed of doing have happened last year which is amazing, but you always want to be better as a musician," she said.

"The biggest thing for me right now is creating a second record that I love."

So does the success mean that she has abandoned her plan to go back and finish her medicine degree that she shelved in its fourth year?

"Would I go back? I'd like to and every time I see programs on medicine I'm tempted to go back to it because I do miss it a lot and I miss science and learning but in the near future, no. I think I'd miss music too much," she said.

Congress demands more FBI answers on Boston bomb suspect

By Patricia Zengerle and Samuel P. Jacobs

WASHINGTON/CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers demanded more answers on the Boston Marathon bombing on Wednesday, unsatisfied with the FBI reaction to warnings about one suspect and expressing doubt about the other suspect's claims that he and his dead brother acted alone.

Some on Capitol Hill questioned whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other U.S. security agencies failed to share information about suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2011, even after reforms enacted to prevent information-hoarding following the September 11 hijacked plane attacks 12 years ago.

Police say the ethnic Chechen brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev planted and detonated two pressure-cooker bombs near the finish line of the marathon on April 15, killing three people and injuring 264.

Tamerlan, 26, was killed in a shootout with police and Dzhokhar, 19, was wounded, captured and charged with two crimes that could result in the death penalty if he were convicted. Dzhokhar remains in fair condition in hospital on Wednesday, U.S. officials said.

Attention has turned to whether U.S. security officials paid enough heed to Tamerlan Tsarnaev having been flagged as a possible Islamic militants by Russia. The FBI interviewed him in 2011 but did not find enough cause to continue investigating.

His name was listed on the U.S. government's highly classified central database of people it views as potential threats, sources close to the bombing investigation said. The list is vast, including about 500,000 people, preventing law enforcement from closely monitoring everyone on it.

Members of Congress were particularly concerned that U.S. Customs generated an alert when Tamerlan Tsarnaev left for Russia in 2012 but no one was aware when he returned and he was not re-interviewed.

"That's something that we have to look at," said Senator Dan Coats, a Republican from Indiana who is also on the Intelligence Committee. "That's one of the key things that we have learned and need to work on to make sure it doesn't happen again, and that is simultaneous communication to all the relevant agencies when a warning is posted."

Members of Congress briefed by law enforcement and media reports citing unidentified sources indicate Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has told investigators from his hospital bed that the brothers grew radical from anti-U.S. material on the internet and acted without assistance from any foreign or domestic militant groups.

"That basically seems to be the story, but I don't see how we can accept that," Representative Peter King, a New York Republican on House Homeland Security Committee, told CNN.

"It may end up being the truth but ... I don't see why he would be giving up any accomplices he may have or talking about any connections his brother may have had in Chechnya or Russia," King said on Wednesday.

Intelligence officials were scheduled to brief members of the House Intelligence committee about the Boston investigation behind closed doors later on Wednesday, and the full Senate was scheduled to receive its own briefing on Thursday.

Investigators have focused on a trip to Dagestan last year by the older Tsarnaev and whether he became involved with or was influenced by Chechen separatists or Islamic militants there.

In Grozny, the capital of Russia's volatile Chechnya region, a member of the extended family Tsarnaev said the brothers were victims of a Russian plot to portray them as Chechen terrorists operating on U.S. soil.

Among the remaining mysteries was how the bombers acquired the black powder used as explosives in the home-made pressure cooker bombs packed with nails and ball bearings. Tamerlan bought two large packages of fireworks in February from a store in Seabrook, New Hampshire, but the explosive powder they contained would not have been "anywhere near enough" to build the bombs, said William Weimer, vice president at Phantom Fireworks.

TRIBUTE TO FALLEN POLICE OFFICER

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and law enforcement agents from around the United States attended a memorial in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Wednesday for a university police officer who authorities say was shot dead by the Tsarnaev brothers on Thursday night.

The service at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology honored Sean Collier, 26, with Biden praising a crowd of hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes police officers for their dedication.

"I'm standing for you. You should not be standing for me," Biden told the crowd as he took the podium. Addressing the slain officer's family, he said, "there is not much that I'm going to be able to do to fill that void, that sense of loss and grief, or answer those nagging questions of why."

Collier was killed about five hours after the FBI released pictures of the two suspects, asking for the public's help in tracking them down.

Police said the two then carjacked a vehicle and later engaged in a gunbattle with police in which Tamerlan was killed and Dzhokhar escaped. He was caught in the Boston suburb of Watertown on Friday night, hiding and bleeding in a boat, after a manhunt involving helicopters and armed vehicles that shut down the greater Boston area.

European markets outperform on ECB rate cut hopes

LONDON (AP) ? The positive tone in markets continued Wednesday, particularly in Europe, as investors grew more hopeful of an interest rate cut from the European Central Bank. Weak U.S. economic data weighed on U.S. shares, however, despite more upbeat earnings.

In Europe, investors were further buoyed by mounting expectations of a rate cut next week from the ECB after another weak business survey for Germany, Europe's biggest economy. The Ifo Institute said its main index of business optimism fell to 104.4 points from 106.7 in March. Market analysts had expected a more modest decline to 106.2.

"With talk of a rate cut in recent policy meetings and the latest soft data, the ECB may finally be ready to make one final conventional move," said Benjamin Reitzes, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets.

In Europe, Germany's DAX rose 1 percent to 7,737 while the CAC-40 in France was 1.2 percent higher at 3,828. Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.4 percent at 6,434 ? Britain doesn't use the euro so it isn't directly affected by developments with regard to the ECB, which controls monetary policy for the 17 European Union countries that use the euro.

European markets have also been buoyed in recent days by progress in Italy to produce a government after inconclusive elections in February.

Italy's president appointed Enrico Letta as premier-designate Wednesday, asking him to form a coalition government and end two months of political paralysis to put the country back on the path of reform and growth. Letta, a 46-year-old longtime center-left lawmaker and No. 2 Democratic Party leader, said he accepted the job knowing it's an enormous responsibility and that Italy's political class "has lost all credibility."

In the U.S., disappointing durable goods order figures dampened down the spirits in the markets despite upbeat earnings statements from the likes of Apple and Sprint Nextel. Procter & Gamble disappointed with a revenue miss.

The Commerce Department reported that durable goods declined 5.7 percent in March largely on the back of lower aircraft bookings. The fall, which was larger than anticipated, followed a 4.3 percent gain the previous month.

"The report will not remove growing concerns that the economy is facing a now typical slowdown," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co.

Earlier in Asia, stocks rallied in the wake of the big gains recorded in Europe and the U.S. the previous day. Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 2.3 percent to close at 13,843.46, its highest close since June 2008, while South Korea's Kospi rose 0.9 percent to 1,935.31.

Hong Kong and mainland Chinese stocks also climbed on expectations that the central government might take action to boost the Chinese economy after recent data showed growth lagging in the world's No. 2 economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 1.7 percent to 22,183.05. Mainland Chinese shares bounced back a day after sharp drops. The Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.6 percent to 2,218.32 and the Shenzhen Composite Index gained 2.2 percent to 943.78.

The currency markets were relatively subdued, with the euro 0.1 percent lower at $1.2990 and the dollar steady at 99.45 yen.

Oil prices advanced, with the benchmark New York rate up 62 cents at $89.80 a barrel.

BlackBerry Q10 coming to Canadian carriers May 1st for $199 on contract

BlackBerry Q10 hands-on

It's usually safe to presume that BlackBerry will give the most love to its home country, and that's proving reasonable with the BlackBerry Q10. Bell, Rogers and Telus have all confirmed that they'll be carrying the QWERTY-equipped smartphone on May 1st, quite possibly putting them on the cutting edge of the Q10 launch schedule. Smaller networks like Fido, Koodo, Sasktel and Virgin Mobile are also on deck. The big three are already taking pre-orders today, but we'd brace for a rather steep price premium -- they're all asking about $199 for the Q10 on a three-year contract, which is more expensive than many of the phone's touch-only rivals. BlackBerry hasn't outlined plans for the US or other countries yet, but we're hoping they get a slightly better deal.

Bombing suspect could face death penalty

Tsarnaev (AP/File)

[Updated at 7:05 p.m. ET]

Terror suspect Dzhokhar "Jahar" Tsarnaev was charged on Monday with two federal counts of using a weapon of mass destruction to kill, injure and cause widespread damage at the Boston Marathon a week ago. If convicted, the 19-year-old could face the death penalty.

Three people were killed and more than 200 others wounded when two powerful homemade bombs exploded near the race?s finish line.

The bed-ridden Tsarnaev was informed of the charges and read his rights in his hospital room Monday morning. The college student is in serious condition at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he is under heavy police guard.

Tsarnaev, who is sedated and unable to speak, suffered apparent gunshot wounds to the head, neck, hand and legs during firefights with police before his capture Friday night, authorities said. His older brother Tamerlan Tsanraev, who investigators say was part of the terror attack, died in a firefight with police during their escape attempt.

In a 10-page criminal complaint against Dzhokhar, an FBI agent says investigators have overwhelming photographic evidence showing the brothers placing two backpack bombs in the crowd at the race finish.

A large pyrotechnic and clothing Dzhokhar wore during the terror attack were later found in his dorm room at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, according to the charges.

The federal complaint sheds no light on a motive for the attack. Miriam Conrad, Dzhokhar's public defender, also asked the court to appoint two more attorneys who are, ?learned in the law applicable to capital cases.?

[Related: Attempts to link Boston bombing influence immigration reform]

Investigators say the Tsarnaev brothers began preparing for an apparent escape attempt just hours after the FBI sought the public?s help by releasing photos of them at the bombing scene.

Shortly before midnight Thursday, one of the brothers carjacked a man at gunpoint, according to the criminal complaint.

?Did you hear about the Boston explosion?? the complaint alleges the carjacker said. ?I did that.?

The complaint goes on to allege that the brothers threw improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at patrol officers who spotted them in the stolen car and gave chase. Bomb-making materials similar to what was recovered in the marathon aftermath were later found inside the abandoned getaway car, according to the charges.

?The presumption of innocence is pretty tough in this case,? said Jimmy Ardoin, a veteran criminal defense attorney who read the criminal complaint at the request of Yahoo News.

?On its face, it seems pretty strong,? Ardoin said. ?Although once you get into court, you never know what will be admitted into evidence and what won?t.

[Related: Officials: Boston suspects motivated by religion]

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for May 30. Despite calls from some Republicans to try Dzhokhar in a military court like a war criminal, White House press secretary Jay Carney said he would not be held as an enemy combatant. It is not known if Boston authorities will file cases against him in state court as well.

The federal government has not revealed if it will seek the death penalty. But in a statement, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said, ?We will hold those who are responsible for these heinous acts accountable to the fullest extent of the law.?

?Thanks to the valor of state and local police, the dedication of federal law enforcement and intelligence officials, and the vigilance of members of the public, we?ve once again shown that those who target innocent Americans and attempt to terrorize our cities will not escape from justice,? Holder said.

The Tsarnaev brothers, who were born in the former Russian territory known as Kyrgyzstan and are of Chechen descent, lived in Cambridge, Mass., for several years. Dzhokhar became a naturalized American citizen last year.

According to investigators, the carjack victim told police that the brothers spoke to one another in a foreign language while he was held hostage. The victim managed to escape on foot when the brothers got out of the car at a gas station.

SimCity update 2.0 hits April 22, offers bug fixes, enhancements -- still no offline mode

Although SimCity has become relatively stable following its problematic launch, there are naturally still ongoing bugs that the folks at EA Maxis have been working to fix. Thankfully, that version 2.0 update that was teased just over a week ago now has an arrival date of April 22 at 4PM ET. Included in the update are 26 bug fixes, along with data map color filters, a color-correct HUD for the colorblind setting and the action of mayors traveling from their mansions to their jobs. Sadly, an offline mode is still no more than wishful thinking, but at least that OS X version should still be on track for a June 11th release. You'll find all the details about your virtual city's soon-to-arrive enhancements at the source link -- expect some server downtime, by the way, when the update itself hits.

GLOBAL MARKETS-Shares, oil rebound after week's big selloff

By Herbert Lash

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World equity markets and oil prices rebounded on Friday in a relief rally after a selloff this week that was triggered by signs of sluggish global growth.

A lockdown and citywide search for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing after another suspect was killed may have contributed to reduced trading volumes but did not appear to have an impact on prices.

Brent crude oil stabilized above $99 a barrel in a second day of gains, while stocks on Wall Street and in Europe advanced in a market still rattled by global demand concerns.

Stocks sold off earlier in the week on recent weak economic data and a plunge in commodity prices. European indices posted their worst week this year and the U.S. benchmark S&P 500, down 3 percent the past four sessions, was on track to do the same.

The S&P 500's close below the 50-day moving average on Thursday indicated the medium-term uptrend in the market could be in peril. The last time the index closed consecutive days under its 50-day average was in early December.

Volume was subdued because of this week's selloff and because no U.S. economic data was released on Friday.

"A lot of folks in Boston are out of the market and anyone not in Boston is stuck watching the TV trying to find out what's going on there," said Brad Bechtel, managing director at foreign exchange brokerage Faros Trading in Stamford, Connecticut.

The market's advance is a reaction to the recent declines more than anything, according to Jack De Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

"It's a relief rally after the last couple of days," he said.

After the selloff, the S&P is still up nearly 9 percent for the year. The pullback could lead investors to reevaluate their positions, said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial in Westport, Connecticut.

"Unless there's a shock to the system, investors will move back into the market as we head through earnings season, but now investors have an opportunity to study the winners and losers more closely," Sheldon said.

The Dow Industrials were pulled lower by a rare quarterly earnings miss from International Business Machines Corp. Three brokerages cut their price targets for the company, whose shares fell 8.1 percent to $190.39, cutting 129 points from the Dow.

But some marquee tech names bolstered the broader market and drove the Nasdaq up more than 1 percent, a day after strong earnings from Google Inc and Microsoft Corp.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 24.11 points, or 0.17 percent, at 14,513.03. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 9.54 points, or 0.62 percent, at 1,551.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 35.89 points, or 1.13 percent, at 3,202.25.

MSCI's all-country world equity index, which tracks about 9,000 stocks in 45 countries, rose 0.5 percent to 355.76. For the week, the index posted its biggest percentage decline since June.

In Europe, the FTSEurofirst 300 of leading regional shares rose 0.5 percent to close at 1,153.19.

The index was down 2.4 percent for the week, marred by weaker economic data from Europe's growth powerhouse, Germany, as well as more forecast-lagging data from the United States.

The U.S. dollar extended its gains on the yen after Japanese officials in Washington said the global community understands its monetary policy is directed at domestic issues rather than currency manipulation.

The euro rose to a session high against the dollar after European Central Bank board member Jens Weidmann said interest rates in Europe are appropriate.

The dollar rose 1.54 percent to 99.64 yen, leaving it within sight of the four-year peak of 99.95 yen reached last week.

The euro rose 0.11 percent to $1.3064.

U.S. stock gains supported a "risk-on" trade in crude oil, sending Brent briefly above $100 a barrel. But worries about global demand and oversupply have kept a lid on the rebound.

Brent crude rose 52 cents to settle at $99.65 a barrel. U.S. crude rose 28 cents to settle at $88.01 a barrel.

"This remains a market very much driven by the equity markets. They've been rebounding and we're just knocking along with that," said Kyle Cooper, managing director of research at IAF Advisors in Houston.

"Crude inventories are at an all-time high, but we're up today," he added. "There are some people who want to believe it's a physical market, but it's not. It's a financial market."

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was down 6/32 in price to yield 1.7066 percent.

Not so KGB cool: Putin blows top at his cabinet in new video

The Russian president is known for being unflappable, but a leaked video shows him shouting and cursing at his cabinet ministers over their 'extremely low' quality of work.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / April 17, 2013

Russia's President Vladimir Putin (c.) tours local housing during a visit to the Russian city of Elista Tuesday. A video leaked on Wednesday shows Mr. Putin shouting and cursing at his cabinet ? a deviation from his usual, cool public persona.

Vladimir Putin usually appears to be the cool, poker-faced tough guy the KGB once trained him to be. But a somewhat different persona is on display in a video clip leaked by a Russian news agency Wednesday.

The edited video, taken at a meeting with Russian cabinet ministers and regional leaders after journalists had been ordered to switch off their cameras, shows Mr. Putin chewing out and cursing at officials for their failure to implement his presidential election promises.

"How are we working? The quality of work is extremely low," Putin told them. "If we're going to work like that then we'll achieve [nothing]."

He then threatened to sack them all.

"If we don?t do this, we will have to admit that either I?m not working effectively, or you all are working badly and you all should leave," Putin said. "I want to draw your attention to the fact that today I am leaning towards the second option."

Putin, whose locked-down lifestyle is so secretive that his wife is rarely seen in public and no one even knows where his two grown-up daughters live, seldom lets the public see his emotional side. But recently he did permit himself a flash of televised anger over delays and cost-overruns in the preparations for next year's Sochi Winter Games ? to which he has staked his personal prestige and authorized expenditures of more than $50 billion.

The video of Putin lambasting his officials was published Wednesday on Lifenews.ru, an online tabloid that's usually Kremlin-friendly, leading some pundits to suggest that Putin may have actually wanted this outburst to be made public as well.

But Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, told journalists that the Kremlin was furious over the leak.

"What was published from the closed part of the meeting is outrageous and unacceptable from an ethical point of view," Mr. Peskov said. "We plan in the near future to make contact with the leadership of the publication, to ask for an explanation."

The Putin who is usually seen on tightly controlled Russian TV is calm, ?magisterial, adventurous, likes to schmooze with celebrities, and is deeply concerned about the fates of endangered birds and animals.

Issues such as his opulent lifestyle ? he enjoys the use of 20 lavish official residences, compared with just eight for the entire British royal family ? and his habitual tardiness for almost any meeting are almost never touched upon in the Russian media.

Nor, at least until recently, were his occasional flashes of temper.

(Recasts) PARIS, April 18 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti criticised his players for lack of concentration and "too much self-importance" after they were knocked out of the French Cup in the quarter-finals. "It is a huge disappointment especially because of the team's attitude," Ancelotti was quoted as saying in French media on Thursday, the day after defeat on penalties at Evian Thonon Gaillard. "There was no concentration, no character, too much self-importance," the Italian said. "The season is not finished but tonight is a disaster. I am sorry. It is my responsibility. ...

Colombians march in polarizing bid to bring peace with FARC

By Helen Murphy

BOGOTA (Reuters) - Waving balloons and dressed in white, tens of thousands of Colombians marched in Bogota and across the nation on Tuesday in a polarizing gathering for peace that critics slam as a show of support for Marxist FARC rebels.

Throngs of people chanting "we want peace" advanced toward the capital's main square, Plaza Bolivar, a few blocks from where former presidential candidate Jorge Eliecer Gaitan was assassinated on April 9 65 years ago.

"The nation is expressing its rejection of violence, violence that has caused so many wounds and so much pain," President Juan Manuel Santos said as he joined the mass.

The march, organized by leftist politicians Ivan Cepeda and Piedad Cordoba, aims to show a united front against violence and in favor of peace. But it has divided the nation as many believe the movement is a launchpad for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, to enter politics.

Santos late on Monday called on the nation to reject what he called "enemies of peace" and join the march to show support for his historic bid to bring an end to five decades of bloodshed with the rebels.

"Peace is the sublime objective of any society," Santos said.

NEGOTIATIONS

Colombia, at war with the FARC since 1964, in November launched a controversial bid to negotiate peace with the rebels during talks in Havana, Cuba.

Critics say Santos is negotiating behind the nation's back and handing the FARC whatever they want.

Former President Alvaro Uribe, once a Santos ally, charges that the FARC, mostly funded by extortion and drug trafficking, will trick the nation as it has in previous peace talks and get away with crimes without being punished.

Government and rebel negotiators are seeking common ground on a five-point agenda, beginning with the thorniest issue of rural development and land reform. Social inequality in Colombia's vast rural territory is considered the root of the conflict - with land ownership concentrated in very few hands.

"This movement shows the people of Colombia are completely decided in favor of peace," organizer Cepeda told Reuters on Tuesday. "We are negotiating peace in Havana but today shows the process is backed by multitudes."

The march is being held on the anniversary of the murder of Gaitan, a leftist politician gunned down as it became clear he would win the 1948 presidential election and fight for the rights of the poor.

His death unleashed a wave of violence and paved the way for the founding of the FARC.

Latin America's longest-running insurgency has left tens of thousands dead, seeded vast rural and mountainous areas with landmines and left scores of villages and towns economically isolated.

While a 10-year military offensive against the FARC has pushed the rebels deep into inhospitable territory and helped rejuvenate the economy, the FARC is still a formidable presence and able to sow fear and cause damage to the nation's economic infrastructure.

The FARC is considered a terrorist group by the United States and Europe.

"We were born into violence, my children were born into violence," said Gustavo Rodriguez, 54, a farmer from Tolima province as he walked toward Bogota's historic center.

"I believe this process will bring peace. It's not that we support Santos, it's not that we support the FARC, it's that we live in the middle of gunfire."

Numerous peace efforts in Colombia since the 1980s have brought mixed success, with some smaller armed groups demobilizing. But the FARC, Latin America's biggest rebel group, has pressed on, funded in large part by drug trafficking.

At the last peace talks in 1999-2002, former President Andres Pastrana ceded the FARC a safe haven the size of Switzerland to promote talks.

But the rebels took advantage of the breathing space to train fighters, build more than 25 airstrips to fly drug shipments and set up prison camps to hold hostages.

LG adds PayPal to its smart TV platform for faster app purchases

DNP LG adds PayPal to smart TVs for faster app purchases

Looking to jumpstart interest in its in-house ecosystem, LG is adding PayPal as a software purchasing option for its latest line of smart TVs, making it the first manufacturer to natively use the service. Available now in the US, Canada and UK, this new addition will let you use either a traditional or Magic remote to navigate an onscreen keyboard when buying apps, games or $50 worth of 3D Disney movie rentals. The real potential time saver here is the addition of an optional "remember me" feature which lets users store their PayPal account information for faster purchases. Look for the service to expand to Australia, France, Germany and Italy sometime this month, with other markets set to follow later.

Zinio Guest Post: Celebrating the ASME Winners

The American Society of Magazine Editors announced their 2013 National Magazine Awards last week. The big winners (New Yorker, Esquire, etc) have defined the best in magazine writing, editing and design for years. So kudos to them. All have embraced and invested heavily in digital publishing.

While this year?s finalists are deserving, I think you can look a little deeper into the ASME finalists to discover some excellent content and maybe find some more future winners of this award. In fact, here are five picks from the 2013 finalists that will surprise you with the range of their content.:

Afar was a finalist for best Website. I love Afar because it is truly a digital experience. Completely collaborative and unpredictable. On Afar?s site and in the magazine you will find travel guides, but you will find much more immersive content than you will in other digital magazines. Example: Rather than a resort roundup for the Bahamas and features about scuba diving, on Afar you find a feature on out-islands of the Bahamas, which uncluttered by hoards of tourists. You may not have heard of Eleuthera. But after you read about it and see the photos you may want to go.

Mother Jones is always a surprise. It was nominated in the category of ?Literary, Political and Professional Magazines.? It is left wing. No question about that. The politics will be a qualifier. But MJ also has excellent photo essays, and underrated arts coverage. The best coverage I read among the flood of SXSW pieces was on MJ.

Texas Monthly is not for Texans only. It has always been known for excellent photography and journalism and was nominated in the Public Interest category. It covers its home state in a surprisingly critical and objective manner, and its food writing is as good as it gets.

http://www.zinio.com/www/browse/issue.jsp?skuId=416126963

HGTV Magazine was nominated for best Magazine Section. In its digital iteration it offers more than you might expect. First off, it?s a surprisingly cool real estate site. Check out its HGTV Front Door section. Also, it?s a wealth of environmentally friendly gardening and home building information. There is a lot to discover and share with friends on HGTV?s digital properties. http://www.zinio.com/www/browse/product.jsp?rf=sch&productId=500641517

mental_floss got to the finals for General Excellence, Print. For me it really shines in its digital version because its lists, random facts and trivia are simply endless. It is the ultimate brain teaser and Trivial Pursuit practice round. Did you know The Iron Man edition of Mr. Potato Head is named Tony Starch? Did you know F. Scott Fitzgerald was a movie critic?

?

In 2002 I conducted market research on consumer?s lifestyles in the Langley, B.C. area. Questions were geared around Nutrition, Exercise and Stress. At the conclusion of the market research, and using the 80-20% rule I developed ? The Lifestyle Pie

80% of our Lifestyle accounts toward Nutrition. Optimal Nutrition fuels our body, mind and believe it or not, our emotional needs. Without optimal nutrition, DIS-EASE invades our cells.

The remainder 20% was broken down as -

10% toward Fitness ? May not seem like a huge percentage. But, fitness is required to assist our bodies to metabolize our Nutrition. When doing a cardiovascular work-out and or a weight-training program, oxygen is being transported to every cell through the body, it assists in the removal of metabolic toxic waste from our system.?

The remainder 10% goes toward - De-Stressing your Body, Mind, and Spirit!? Visit a spa, meditate, create quiet time for yourself?after all, you deserve it!

To Compliment The Lifestyle Pie, The SIMPLE Solution was created to clarify and make it SIMPLE for participants to begin a healthy lifestyle.

S ? Satisfy your body?s NUTRITIONAL needs.

I -? Incorporate Physical Activity and Fitness.

M ? Modify your STRESS levels

P? ? Be Positive about your SELF-IMAGE

L ? Look Inward what are your CHALLENGES

E ? Exercise Patience, Loving Yourself, and Motivation

Iron Man s Top 10 Heavy Metal Moments Reflections on the First 50 Years of Scientific R&D from Stark Industries

At the risk of stating the obvious, a key component of Iron Man's mythology is the suit of armor. And all the science and engineering research and development that Tony Stark has poured into that suit--and related technology--through Stark Industries. With the next Marvel Studies movie ("Iron Man 3") coming up in May, I thought this was a good time to reflect back on the Armored Avenger and some of the key moments in his last half century of life. What you read below is my chronological "Top 10" list of epic technological outcomes for the Man of Metal. 1. Tales of Suspense #39 from March 1963 "Iron Man Is Born!" 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the Invincible Iron Man. So let' start by pointing out his debut in a story penned by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber with art by Don Heck and lettering by Art Simek. This is the original Iron Man origin story with Tony Stark injured in Viet Nam. Tony, along with professor Ho Yinsen, is forced by evil Wong-Chu to build weapons. Instead they build the original Iron Man "gray armor." This suit is really just like a heavily reinforced suit of armor with some rockets and limited weapons. My favorite quote is Tony Stark to Wong-Chu: "You are not facing a wounded dying man now--or an aged, gentle professor! This is Iron Man who opposes you and all you stand for!" In fact this quote makes me wonder--where are all the young, aggressive professors when you really need them? 2. Tales of Suspense #48 from December 1963 "The New Iron Man Battles... The Mysterious Mr. Doll!" Tony creates a new red and gold armor system that is much reduced in bulkiness. It may seem a subtle advance, but it is a much more anthropomorphic suit. This means he can move in it much more easily and the armor is also shown as modular and storable. While it looks much more awe-inspiring, it is less safe and protective against concussive impacts than the old armor. 3. Invincible Iron man #218 "Deep Trouble" from 1987. In this story Tony Stark develops an additional exoskeleton to fit over his Iron Man armor so he can go deep sea diving. This fantastic armor is shown in Panel "C" of the Figure below. Notice how it is pretty close to the general design ideas in the "swimmable" Newtsuit and Exosuits (shown in the A and B panels) and created by inventor Phil Nuytten. I really like this link between science fact and science fiction. I also really like how Tony wears the Iron Man helmet even while inside the additional exoskeleton for deep water action. 4. Iron Man #284 from September 1992 "Legacy of Iron" This is the full debut of Jim Rhodes as War Machine. Tony (in a "posthumous" transmission) tells Rhodey he created the new heavily militarized armor specifically for him and his body. This hints at the need for customized armor and the fact that a neuroprosthetic as advanced as the Iron Man and War Machine suits cannot simply be worn like clothing off a rack. Personal tuning and a lot of training are needed. 5. Iron Man #290 from March 1993 "This Year's Model" Tony is partially paralyzed and it is uncertain whether he will be able to regain movement. So he creates a remote control "telepresence armor" (NTU-150) that makes use of remote control via a brain implant and headset. The general idea presages concepts of brain-machine interfaces being explored now. But not for controlling robot suits of armor. Yet. 6. Iron Man (Volume 4) #1-6 from January 2005 to May 2006 "Extremis" story arc This is the arc that unveils the brilliant concept of the "Extremis" neural interface armor. It was written under the gifted hand of Warren Ellis with amazing art by Adi Granov. Iron Man's origin story is updated from Viet Nam to the Gulf War and the concept of a neural interface for the Iron Man suit is described. As I argue extensively in "Inventing Iron Man", the Extremis armor is the closest to what would be needed for the whole Iron Man concept to work with a biological human body--as a fully integrated neuroprosthetic. Lots of indications in advance of Iron Man 3 suggest Extremis will play a major part in the plot. 7. Iron Man #1-6 from March to August 2007 in special "Iron Man: Hypervelocity" series In "Hypervelocity," the Iron Man armor gains sentience and goes berserk. It flies around without a "pilot" wreaking havoc until Tony, using older armor, eventually defeats it. A good warning of the delicate balance between needing to create almost autonomous armor that can be controlled by a human user with safeguards (think Isaac Asimov's 3 laws of robotics) holding it in check and in control. 8. Marvel Studios Films Iron Man (2008) This movie introduced the motorized robotic equipment for dressing Tony Stark in Iron Man armor. Right now we don't even have the technology to safely dress Tony Stark in the Iron Man as shown in the robotics, let alone create the Iron Man armor itself. I suggest the closest we are is dressing automobiles. The 2013 Ford Escape has been reckoned as deriving from one of the most automated manufacturing processes yet seen. But we are not yet able to safely place armor plating on a human via robot controls. 9. Iron Man (Volume 5) Invincible Iron Man #8 from February 2009 "World's Most Wanted # 1: Shipbreaking" (and continued in 6 parts until July 2009). Under the deft penmanship of Matt Fraction, this storyline uses concepts from Warren Ellis' neural interface of "Extremis" with "biological upgrading" of humans and direct nanotech interface. A neat twist in this story arc is the introduction of Pepper Potts to the Extremis procedure. During which she wonders "...Where is the line drawn? Between man and machine? Where does...humanity end?" This is followed up by Pepper discovering a special suit of armor for her--officially known as the MARK 1616. But it's commonly known as "Rescue" because it was designed for "heavy rescue and recovery". Pepper in the Rescue suit really is the ultimate application of one-time military technology for full-on civilian use. In Part 5 of "World's Most Wanted" Pepper says "There's not a single weapon anywhere on this suit. Everything is defensive, protective...I kind of love it." 10. Iron Man 2 (2010) At his birthday party, Tony Stark is shown wearing and using the Iron Man suit while heavily intoxicated. Jim Rhodes dons the spare (soon to become War Machine) armor to try and subdue him. Blasts go off and huge armored bodies crash through large chunks of the building. This scene riffs heavily on the story lines in the classic David Michelinie story arc "Demon in a Bottle" from the '80s. It also shows very clearly the horrific implications of mixing technology and alcohol abuse. Here it's in the form of a fictional suit of armor, but it stands as a metaphor for our use of commonly found "exoskeletons"--our cars. 11. Yes. I know this is a Top 10 list. But in homage to the heavy metal theme, I'm going all "Spinal Tap" here--my list goes to 11. And at number 11 I am going to plug my own revised origin story for the Golden Avenger found in Inventing Iron man (2011). Instead of a chest plate magnetic field to keep shrapnel from his heart, I prefer that Tony had an arrhythmia. His life- threatening arrhythmia (let's give him ventricular fibrillation) means that the intrinsic electrical pacing that causes Tony's heart to contract and to pump blood is not working correctly. As a result of this arrhythmia, Tony's heart beats irregularly either too fast or too slow or with gaps. Because of this he creates and has surgically implanted a cardioverting defibrillator (ICD). The ICD monitors his heart rate and then provides electrical shocks to reset his heart rhythm when he has a problem. I hope Stan Lee forgives me, but I like this version better. That brings us to the end of my list celebrating Iron Man's Golden Anniversary. Now we just have to sit back and wait for the intersection points where real science fact often catches up with--and occasionally exceeds--comic book science fiction. ? (AP) ? President Barack Obama is providing rides to 11 relatives of those killed in the shooting at Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School so they can attend his gun control speech Monday before heading to Washington on Air Force One to personally encourage senators to back gun legislation that faces tough opposition.

After Obama's speech in Hartford, relatives of seven children and one staffer killed during December's massacre at the school will travel back to Washington with him, according to the nonprofit organization that works with the families, Sandy Hook Promise.

The White House says Obama is going to argue in his speech that lawmakers have an obligation to the children killed and other victims of gun violence to allow an up-or-down vote in the Senate ? which would require 50 votes to pass ? rather than use procedural maneuvers to require 60 votes, potentially sinking the legislation.

"Imagine what they would say to the families of victims in Newtown about why a certain measure never came to a vote because they filibustered it," White House spokesman Jay Carney said ahead of Obama's speech.

Gun legislation could come up for debate in the Senate this week as lawmakers return from spring break. The Sandy Hook families want to speak to senators who have not voiced support for the legislation, to ask for support in memory of their children and the school staff who were killed Dec. 14. The White House offered to give the families a ride so they could also attend Obama's speech before their lobbying push.

Sandy Hook Promise said in a statement, "The group is encouraging senators to come together around legislative proposals that will both save lives and respect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans."

In his speech Monday evening, Obama plans to invoke the memories of the 26 students and staff members killed. He is speaking at the University of Hartford, near the state capitol where last week the governor signed into law some of the nation's strictest gun control laws with the Sandy Hook families standing behind him.

But legislation in Washington faces a tougher challenge, as the nation's memories of the shooting fade with time and the National Rifle Association wages a formidable campaign against Obama's proposals. Senators were negotiating Monday in search of an eleventh-hour deal to expand background checks for gun buyers, after weeks of talks had failed to reach a compromise that could win bipartisan support.

Other measures Obama wants are unlikely to pass. Senate leaders say there are not enough votes for an assault weapons ban. Prospects are also bleak for a proposal to limit the number of rounds of ammunition in a single magazine to 10.

With time running out on negotiations, the White House is making an all-hands-on-deck push this week. Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder planned to promote their plan at the White House on Tuesday with law enforcement officials. First lady Michelle Obama planned to wade into the debate Wednesday with a speech on youth violence in her hometown of Chicago. And on Thursday, Biden was taking part in a discussion on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" with people who have different views on gun control.

The matter is divisive in Newtown, Conn., as in the rest of the country. Not all Sandy Hook families support gun control, and even those involved with the lobbying push organized by Sandy Hook Promise are not backing the assault weapons ban. But those families are asking lawmakers to expand background checks, increase penalties for gun trafficking and limit the size of magazines. The magazine issue has a particular resonance with those families.

"It's been stated in recent weeks that somehow the memory of Newtown has faded, at least in Washington," Carney said, adding that the experiences of the victims' families show that's not the case. "Those memories will never fade. The pain will never go away."

Nicole Hockley told The Associated Press in an interview that she wonders if her 6-year-old son, Dylan, might still be alive if shooter Adam Lanza hadn't be able to bring 10 magazines holding 30 rounds each into the school that day. Lanza was able to get off 154 shots during a four-minute rampage in the school. But he stopped shooting briefly in her son's classroom to reload, giving 11 children time to escape.

"They ran for their lives," Hockley said in a telephone interview Friday. "Dylan was not so fortunate. If there were lower capacity magazine clips, there's a chance Dylan would be here with me today."

Hockley plans to introduce Obama in Hartford and sit on stage during the speech with her husband, Ian. The other families who plan to fly on Air Force One are scheduled to meet privately with the president before he speaks and then attend the speech. Those relatives include:

? Mark and Jackie Barden ? parents of 7-year-old Daniel

? Nelba Marquez-Greene ? mother of 6-year-old Ana

? Neil Heslin ? father of 6-year-old Jesse

? Jennifer Hensel ? mother of 6-year-old Avielle

? Bill Sherlach ? husband of Mary, a 56-year-old school psychologist

? Ben and Cheyanne Wyatt ? parents of 6-year-old Allison

? David and Francine Wheeler ? parents of 6-year-old Ben
