COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? After waiting for two days, Rebekah and Byron Largent learned from lists distributed by authorities that their home was among the hundreds that burned to the ground in the most destructive wildfire ever to rage across Colorado.

It was especially hurtful as their house was destroyed on their daughter Emma's first birthday.

"Our minds just started sifting through all the memories of that house that we lost that can't be replaced," Rebekah Largent said Thursday night. She remembered her wedding dress, a grandmother's china, the rocking chair where the couple would sit with Emma.

"Our little girl, our 1-year-old daughter, that's the house that she's lived in the longest. It's just really hard to have lost a lot of the memories connected to that, you know? They just burned," she said.

Officials said the Waldo Canyon fire that forced tens of thousands to flee this city 60 miles south of Denver destroyed an estimated 346 homes and left at least one person dead.

Police Chief Pete Carey said the remains of one person were found in a home where two people had been reported missing. Neither the victim nor the missing person has been identified.

Carey said police are still trying to track down the whereabouts of "less than 10" people who may be unaccounted for.

President Barack Obama was to tour fire-stricken areas Friday after issuing a disaster declaration for Colorado, releasing federal funds to help.

Rich Harvey, the incident commander in charge of the massive firefighting effort, said the fire was held at bay overnight, with no growth of the perimeter and no more houses lost.

The fire was 15 percent contained Friday morning.

Jerri Marr, supervisor of the Pike and San Isabel national forests where the blaze started, said favorable weather was a boon to firefighters Thursday.

"Yesterday we had great weather," she said. "Looks like we're going to have that same weather today."

From above Colorado Springs, the destruction was painfully clear: Rows and rows of houses were reduced to smoldering ashes even as some homes just feet away survived largely intact.

When he first saw the aerial photos of the homes burned in his neighborhood, Ryan Schneider recognized immediately that his house had been spared.

But relief quickly turned to sadness for his many friends and neighbors who hadn't been so lucky.

"I mean, there's a lifetime of things that people collect in these homes, and they've lost it all," said Schneider, vice president of the 1,700-home community association for the Mountain Shadows neighborhood.

Amid the devastation in the foothills of Colorado Springs, there were hopeful signs. Weather conditions improved Thursday and some evacuation orders were lifted by the evening, though there was no immediate word on how many people would be allowed back. People were told to still be ready to flee at a moment's notice.

The Air Force Academy was letting residents return Friday morning and officials said normal operations would resume throughout most of the academy.

"We're gaining more confidence," said Bret Waters, director of the Colorado Springs emergency management office. "It doesn't mean we're out of the woods."

More than 30,000 people frantically packed up belongings Tuesday night as the flames swept through their neighborhoods.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said two people have been arrested in connection with a burglary at an evacuated home.

Community officials began the process of notifying residents Thursday that their homes were destroyed. The lists of more than 30 street names were posted at a local high school, listing those areas with heavy damage. Anxious residents scanned the sheets, but for many, the official notification was a formality. They recognized their street on aerial pictures and carefully scrutinize the images to determine the damage. Photos and video from The Associated Press and the Denver Post showed widespread damage.

Colorado Springs, the state's second-largest city, is home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center, NORAD and the Air Force Space Command, which operates military satellites. They were not threatened.

Conditions were still too dicey to allow authorities to begin trying to figure out what sparked the blaze that has raged for much of the week and already burned more than 26 square miles.

Authorities said earlier the fire was 29 square miles. More precise mapping often results in revisions of size estimates for active fires.

More than 1,000 personnel and six helicopters were fighting the fire, which had cost at least $3.2 million to fight.

All eight Air Force cargo planes equipped to fight wildfires will be operating Saturday out of Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, the Air Force said.

This will be the first time the entire fleet has been activated simultaneously since 2008, Col. Jerry Champlin said.

Four of the planes are already attacking Colorado wildfires from Peterson. Late Thursday, U.S. Northern Command approved a Forest Service request to activate the other four.

The C-130s are assigned to National Guard and Reserve units in California, Colorado, North Carolina and Wyoming.

Hundreds of people sought refuge at area shelters operated by the Red Cross, including tourists who'd come to enjoy the Colorado summer.

Preston Harrington, 40, of Lake Charles, La., had been hoping to climb nearby Pikes Peak.

He had been at a Manitou Springs motel when he was evacuated early Sunday, and then moved to a shelter at a high school and was living out of a suitcase

"No drawer, nothing to put this stuff in, it wears on you," Harrington said.

Schneider, the local neighborhood leader, said the enormity of the losses would take a while to sink in.

"There's a lot of tears being shed out there, it's tough," he said.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? A 72-square-mile wildfire in central Utah has destroyed at least 56 structures and continues to burn with just 20 percent containment, authorities said. Officials expected the damage estimate to rise as they continue their assessment.

? The smaller fire near St. George, Utah, started Wednesday and had grown to 2,000 acres by midnight, forcing some residents to evacuate. The fire, which was 60 percent contained Friday, was burning about three miles north of Zion National Park. At least eight structures were destroyed.

? Fire crews in southeastern Montana used a break in the weather to dig containment lines around two wildfires that have burned 200 square miles and dozens of homes. The improved conditions led to residents clamoring to be let back in to check their properties and assess the damage, but authorities kept evacuation orders in place for hundreds of people.

? A Wyoming wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest has grown from to nearly 36 square miles, officials said.

? In northern Colorado, about 1,900 people were allowed back into their homes on Thursday more than two weeks after the devastating High Park Fire erupted. The blaze was 85 percent contained. The fire killed one woman and destroyed 259 homes, authorities said Friday after the latest damage assessment. The destructive toll marked a state record until being eclipsed by the Colorado Springs fire.

? A wildfire gaining steam in western Colorado prompted officials to evacuate homes of about 50 residents in the southern part of De Beque as the 19-square-mile blaze threatened to cross Interstate 70 Thursday night. A 13-mile stretch of the highway was closed overnight but one lane in each direction reopened on Friday.

Texas' health care decisions pending after ruling

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Texas leaders were left licking their wounds and weighing their options Thursday after a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court upholding most of President Barack Obama's historic health care overhaul.

Gov. Rick Perry called the ruling a "stomach punch to the American economy," while state Attorney General Greg Abbott interpreted it as somewhat of a victory for states' rights. In the aftermath, it's unclear how Texas will address the creation of insurance markets, or whether the state will expand Medicaid after the ruling stated the federal government can't withhold states' entire Medicaid allotment if they don't expand the program.

Perry spokeswoman Lucy Nashed said the governor's office will work with Abbott and the appropriate state agencies to determine the effects of the court's decision. The governor gave few specifics, but did blast the ruling, saying that "freedom is under assault."

"I kind of feel like I'm watching that old movie 'The Godfather' and the American people looked the Godfather in the face and he said, 'I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse,'" Perry said on Fox News Channel. "And that offer is, 'You're going to buy my insurance, and if you don't, I'm going to tax you.' That is just unconscionable."

About 6.2 million Texans ? a quarter of the state's population ? are uninsured.

The state estimates about 2 million people would have been added to the Texas Medicaid rolls in the first two years under a Medicaid expansion. But with the Supreme Court giving Texas the leeway to hold off on that expansion without losing federal funds, the decision on whether to do so will be decided when the Legislature convenes in January.

"The state is going to have to consider several options. One is whether or not they want to expand the state Medicaid system consistent with the parameters set out in Obamacare, or if the state wants to exempt itself from that expansion," Abbott said on a conference call from Washington. "That will be a policy decision for the policymakers in Austin to make."

Texas Health and Human Services estimated that the Medicaid expansion would cost the state $27 billion in the first 10 years.

Agency Commissioner Tom Suehs said he is pleased the court gave states the choice not to expand Medicaid, saying the law "put states in the no-win situation of losing all their Medicaid funding or expanding their programs knowing that they would face billions of dollars in extra costs down the road."

Erin Daly, spokeswoman for Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio, said the speaker has charged the House Committees on Insurance and Public Health with monitoring implementation of the law, which will guide legislators' work once they are back in session next year.

Texas was one of more than two dozen states that sued, claiming Congress did not have the authority to enact the health care overhaul.

The attorney general said Texas was planning further legal action to stop the health care law. But health care advocates said it was time for the state to move toward implementing the changes called for in the act.

"Starting today, there's no real excuse for dragging your feet," said Bee Moorhead, executive director of Texas Impact, a statewide religious grassroots network with a focus that has included health care for all people. "It's time to go ahead and roll up your sleeves and get to work and stop thinking up a way to circumvent this ruling."

Texas has not yet implemented the exchange where individuals and small businesses can shop for private coverage from a range of competing insurers. States face Nov. 16 deadline to submit a plan to the federal government for an exchange. The federal government will implement the system by 2014 if Texas doesn't comply in time.

Abbott said a decision on creating an insurance market will be "hammered out in the coming weeks and months."

He said that even though the court's ruling went against Texas, it was still a victory for individual liberty and states' rights.

He said that "despite the outcome of this case, the federal government is more restrained than it was yesterday," noting that the court sided with Texas and other states that filed lawsuits claiming the law violated congressional powers under the federal Commerce Clause. But Abbott acknowledged losing the case because of the court's "novel application" of federal taxation authority.

Chief Justice John Roberts cast the deciding vote, and Abbott said that, upon close examination of dissenting Justice Anthony Kennedy's opinion, "it looks as though Chief Justice Roberts may have seemingly engaged in some judicial activism as opposed to strict construction in order to reach a result."

Roberts was "quite literally reaching to uphold the validity of the law," the attorney general said.

Who Pays for Worker's Compensation Benefits | Giribaldi & Manaras ...

Workers? compensation insurance is meant to provide wage loss and medical benefits to workers who are injured in the course and scope of their employment. Who really pays? A recent study reveals that seventy-nine percent (79%) of the billions of dollars spent on work place injuries and illnesses are actually paid by employer-provided health insurance, Medicare, Social Security, and even the injured employees.? The study compiled data from 2007 from several governmental and nonprofit organizations.? The data demonstrates that the total costs of occupational injuries and illnesses was nearly $250 billion dollars.? Of that amount only twenty-one percent (21%) or $51.7 billion was covered by workers? compensation.? Shockingly, the study found that injured workers and their families contributed $10.38 billion of the total costs. The remaining $150.38 billion dollars was paid for from other sources including Medicare and Social Security.? The end result therefore is that we, and NOT the insurance companies, are paying higher Medicare and income taxes to help ensure workplace safety. The study suggests that one solution for helping with this problem is to:

?eliminate the stigma often associated with filing workers? compensation claims by openly?acknowledging the legitimacy of using workers? compensation insurance?for??????????????? occupational injuries.???

?In order to combat these cost shifting measures taken by insurance companies, it is essential that injured workers file for workers? compensation benefits.

Woodbridge MMA - Woodbridge -- A Portal to Martial Arts

In Woodbridge, MMA experts teach the mixed martial arts -- a range of different techniques from different countries. Yet they also teach you how to master yourself, because unless you can do that, you may not realize your full potential as a martial arts practitioner.

Philosophy and the martial arts

If you are new to the martial arts, you may have gained some very misleading impressions if you have formed your views based upon the movies and TV alone. To be fair, some representations have attempted to show at least some relationship between philosophy and the techniques used in martial arts -- examples such as the Kung Fu TV series of the 1970s or movies such as Enter The Dragon or perhaps The Karate Kid might come to mind.

Yet too many representations major exclusively on the physical techniques and the fighting prowess of the martial arts practitioner and exclude the mental disciplines associated with such expertise. Even those that do make an effort to discuss the wider philosophical and spiritual issues associated with the martial arts may be guilty of over-complicating the entire area. Some cite the Kung Fu series as a prime example of such over-complexity, to the extent that the lead character's points are sometimes incomprehensible and it isn't clear what he is saying or why he is saying it.

Certainly, in Woodbridge, MMA trainers don't propose that practitioners of the martial arts spend excessive amounts of time engaged in esotericism. There is need for a balance between the practical learning and application of technique and the mastery of certain mental and spiritual disciplines and expert tutors will achieve that balance.

The role of philosophy, spirituality and mental discipline

Over the millennia, many cultures (including some of those in the west) have realized that there is a fundamental link between mind and body. This is reflected in age-old adages such as "sound mind -- healthy body".

There is also a similar link between the wider environment we live in and the way we perceive ourselves in it. The way we view ourselves directly affects the way we interact with our surroundings. There are many examples of this reality including things such as "victim body language" -- which is a recognized tendency for some people to give off signals to others (unintentionally) that they may be a potential victim-in-the-making.

In order to fully master self-defense and the martial arts, at centers in Woodbridge, MMA experts need to teach techniques to help students understand these relationships and to develop the philosophical and spiritual self-awareness necessary to develop the mental disciplines required. This isn't anything to do with religion or personal belief systems -- it is about developing an awareness of self and taking steps to strengthen that as a fundamental platform for developing martial arts skills. Ultimately, that helps build a student's total defense capabilities both physically and mentally (e.g. in improved self-belief).

At centers of excellence in Woodbridge, MMA trainers will always be only too happy to explain these relationships in more detail.

If you?re looking to learn Martial Arts, Pat Tray is chief instructor at the Trident Academy of Mixed Martial Arts, the premier training and instruction centre in the region. In Woodbridge, MMA, Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts, Combat Submission Wrestling and Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, can all be studied under the best martial arts instructors from across the NOVA and DC area.

Exxon's CEO: Climate, energy fears overblown

NEW YORK (AP) ? ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson says fears about climate change, drilling, and energy dependence are overblown.

In a speech Wednesday, Tillerson acknowledged that burning of fossil fuels is warming the planet, but said society will be able to adapt. The risks of oil and gas drilling are well understood and can be mitigated, he said. And dependence on other nations for oil is not a concern as long as access to supply is certain, he said.

Tillerson blamed a public that is "illiterate" in science and math, a "lazy" press, and advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" for energy misconceptions in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations.

He highlighted that huge discoveries of oil and gas in North America have reversed a 20-year decline in U.S. oil production in recent years. He also trumpeted the global oil industry's ability to deliver fuels during a two-year period of dramatic uncertainty in the Middle East, the world's most important oil and gas-producing region.

"No one, anywhere, any place in the world has not been able to get crude oil to fuel their economies," he said.

In his speech and during a question-and-answer session after, he addressed three major energy issues: Climate change, oil and gas drilling pollution, and energy dependence.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Tillerson, in a break with predecessor Lee Raymond, has acknowledged that global temperatures are rising. "Clearly there is going to be an impact," he said Wednesday.

But he questioned the ability of climate models to predict the magnitude of the impact. He said that people would be able to adapt to rising sea levels and changing climates that may force agricultural production to shift.

"We have spent our entire existence adapting. We'll adapt," he said. "It's an engineering problem and there will be an engineering solution."

Andrew Weaver, chairman of climate modeling and analysis at the University of Victoria in Canada, disagreed with Tillerson's characterization of climate modeling. He said modeling can give a very good sense of the type of climate changes that are likely. And he said adapting to those changes will be much more difficult and disruptive than Tillerson seems to be acknowledging.

Steve Coll, author of the recent book "Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power," said he was surprised Exxon would already be talking about ways society could adapt to climate change when there is still time to try to avoid its worst effects. Also, he said, research suggests that adapting to climate change could be far more expensive than reducing emissions now. "Moving entire cities would be very expensive," he said.

Legislation or regulation that would help slow the emissions of global warming gases would likely lead to lower demand for oil and gasoline, and could reduce Exxon's profit.

DRILLING

Tillerson expressed frustration at the level of public concern over new drilling techniques that tap natural gas and oil in shale formations under several states. He said environmental advocacy groups that "manufacture fear" have alarmed a public that doesn't understand drilling practices ? or math, science or engineering in general. He blamed "lazy" journalists for producing stories that scare the public but don't investigate the claims of advocacy groups.

Drilling for oil and gas will always involve risks of spills and accidents, he said. But those risks are manageable and worth taking because they are small given the amount of energy they produce.

Drilling in shale formations, he said, only poses a small risk to those living nearby. It is neither life threatening nor long lasting and can be controlled in the event of an accident.

Drillers force millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and some hazardous chemicals into shale formations. The technique breaks up rock and creates escape routes for oil and gas. If the drilling wastewater is not treated properly or if it seeps through cracked drilling pipes, it could contaminate drinking water.

The industry's biggest challenge, he said, is "taking an illiterate public and try to help them understand why we can manage these risks."

ENERGY SECURITY

Tillerson made a distinction between energy security and energy dependence. He said that energy security ? making sure that the economy has access to energy ? is crucial.

But he said access to energy is not in peril. "Some of the fears around energy security are not well founded," he said.

The quest for energy independence, though, is misguided, he said. It doesn't matter where the U.S. gets oil because crude is priced globally. Even if the U.S. used only oil from North America, a disruption in the Middle East would increase global prices, hurt the U.S. and global economies, and force Americans to pay more at the pump.

Even if the U.S. no longer needed Middle Eastern oil, it would likely want to play a major role in helping maintain the region's security, Tillerson said.

Sonnen and Silva as comic book characters

Because there hasn't been enough written about Chael Sonnen and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva this week, here they are in comic book form.

The UFC is producing a comic book about the two leading up to their fight.Silva, unsurprisingly, resembles Spiderman while Sonnen has elements of Captain America and Wonder Woman. (Before any of you think this is a slam, Wonder Woman is the coolest. If anyone besides Diana of the Themyscira could handle the Lasso of Truth, it's Sonnen.) Check out their Facebook page every day before UFC 148 to read a new panel of the comic.

BT kicks off 330Mbps 'FTTP on Demand' trials, reveals pilot locations

Not everyone is apparently in love with British operator BT's green boxes. Still, that isn't stopping the company from serving up its high-fiber diet to those who want to have speedy Internet connections. For its latest project, BT's Openreach division has started offering an "FTTP on Demand" program that provides fiber-to-the-premises at 330Mbps speeds to folks or businesses who order the service. The project will be done in phases at eight locations, starting with High Wycombe, Bristol South and St Agnes, Cornwall in July. Next up is Edinburgh's Waverley exchange in September followed by Watford, Cardiff, Basingstoke and Manchester Central in 2013. Communications providers can decide to cover installations costs by absorbing a one-off charge, having higher monthly fees or passing the whole thing to the consumer. Want to gobble up more info about BT's latest fiber-filled broadband service? Then check out the good, old PR after the break.

Another Day Another Dollar | Mamapalooza l Women Empowered ...

One never knows where inspiration is going to come from and I have not been very inspired these last few weeks.

While making breakfast this morning, a line from a song on the radio popped out at me. ?Another day, another dollar,? the singer harmonized. The full lyrics of the song slipped away, but the gist was, that we all have a higher calling than just the dollars we bring home.

Money has been on my mind. Ever since June, the Museum Of Motherhood has been super slow. A number of neighborhood families that have been active M.O.M. participants since the museum?s opening are migrating to the suburbs, and others are on vacation. For those who know me, you might be surprised by a moment of glumness, but in fact, I am glum today.

I need help. Even more than me needing help, the museum needs help. So, I?m reaching out.

This week? the fund Max Sidorov, a Canadian man, set up for bullied grandmother Karen Klein topped $650,000.

Yesterday Anne-Marie Slaughter set off a firestorm when she wrote about why ?Women Can?t Have It All? ? specifically jobs out of the home and in the home as mothers and caregivers.

A couple of weeks ago, we were all over the Time Magazine cover featuring a nursing mother and her toddler.

It seems motherhood, mother wars, feminism, women and working mothers continue to raise eyebrows and be headline-worthy, while inane amounts of money crowd source to an unfortunate grandmother, but our priorities are still all over the place when it comes to funding forward motion with regard to viewing motherhood, mother studies and research on families in any kind of cohesive, positive, forward-moving way.

Is the media invested in simply perpetuating the conflicts women and mothers face? Is a catfight more meaningful that funding real, inclusive studies? Where was Carol Evans, President of Working Mother Magazine, yesterday during the CNN debates? WMM?s long-term studies of working mothers, family friendly corporations and groundbreaking online petition for paid parental leave are the things I?d like to hear more about.

And, even closer to my heart, where is the funding for the Museum Of Motherhood?

We opened the museum in September 2011, almost 11 months ago. Despite the compelling conversations that happen daily within our four walls, and the exhibits that appear to inspire and educate, most community members are just looking for a clean, quiet place to hang out with their babies and toddlers.

That?s great, but where?s the interest in picking up recently published academic articles on ?Spirituality and Motherhood? or ?WorkLife Balance?, (and the online course we pioneered with Minnesota State University) or published materials by the politically active group Moms Rising or taking time to pick up one of the many books in our library that focus on the history of women and mothers in the not too distant past.

Out of a recent college class of 25 freshman visiting the museum, only 1 knew what a Suffragette was. ?No one was aware of any of the information on our ?Birth Practices Through The Ages? panels and all of them appeared stunned by the economics of motherhood depicted on the salary comparisons of Alexia Nye Jackson?s exhibit ?Mother The Job?.

If we care about individuals, if we care about families, if we care about our future, if we?re curious about how human beings get to the planet, and where humanity is going, what better place to share our investigations, understandings, herstory and information than the Museum Of Motherhood.

Erin LaBelle Photography Exhibit, M.O.M.

I suggest the Museum Of Motherhood is an even better platform of discussion and investigation than CNN and Time Magazine, and that if you?re interested in actively shaping our future, Motherhood and family is something worth investigating by more than just a trial and error, public forum platform. If you?ve visited us, care about the concept or even remotely think this might be worthy of some of your time, and more specifically ? your money, please help us succeed by making a donation today.

There is a fundamental disconnect in our society about concepts of value regarding caregiving and motherhood. This is something I?m going to continue to blog about. Look for part 2 and 3 to this series: ?A Stipend For Mothers? and ?A Degree In Motherhood.?

It?s going to be a long hot summer and with your support, The Museum Of Motherhood would like to continue to develop into the fall season.

The Museum Of Motherhood is made possible through subsidized rent from New York GYMBOREE Franchise owners, Deb Whitefield and Barry Hanson. However, we face serious struggles without additional funding from individuals and corporations who believe a place like M.O.M. should and must continue its work in the area of family studies and more.

Please make a pledge, however small, today online. We currently have $600.00 in the bank. Tough to admit this, but we truly do need ?a little help from our friends?.

This is the kind of miracle we need: A church in North Carolina was about to close its doors until a guardian angel pulled up in a blue pickup truck, and offered to pay off the church?s debt of $345,000. The pastor said this stranger gave him the money with no strings attached. The pastor spent the next couple of days unpacking everything they had already put in storage. The donor wants to stay completely anonymous, but the pastor did say he was a businessman, who felt extremely blessed and wanted to share.

Today?s blog is by Joy Rose, Founding Director of the Museum Of Motherhood, who has pledged one year of her time, salary-free to see to the inception and success of M.O.M. That year is running out and the museum needs your help today! In addition to the generous donation of space by Deb Whitefield and Barry Hanson, the museum has received donations from P & G and is the beneficiary of Working Mother Magazine?s Silent Auction and their annual WorkLife Congress. M.O.M. is grateful to its interns, community volunteers and individual donors like Lynn Kuechle, Suzanne Dawson (honored on M.O.M.?s?Founding Legacy Membership wall) and matriarch Joy Rose Sr. to name a few as well as the local moms and kids who keep the museum active daily.

(AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says Mitt Romney didn't ask him to be his running mate when they appeared at a fundraiser on Tuesday.

Christie also told a town hall audience in northern New Jersey on Wednesday that he has no inside information on who the likely GOP presidential nominee will pick as his running mate. He said he doesn't expect it will be him.

In Christie's words, Romney "did not ask me last night to run for vice president while I was with him."

Christie and Romney raked in $1.7 million at the fundraiser. That's $400,000 more than Romney collected during his last visit to New Jersey, when he was still being challenged for the nomination.

Polls show Romney trails President Barack Obama among New Jersey voters.

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps went stroke for stroke into the wall in the 200-meter freestyle. Lochte's hand got there first, with Phelps touching second.

Imagine what Wednesday night's final will be like.

The world's top two swimmers met up in the same semifinal Tuesday night, with Lochte winning in 1 minute, 46.25 seconds. Phelps was just behind at 1:47.27, setting up another memorable confrontation in the final.

"It's going to be a tough race tomorrow," Phelps said. "It's probably going to be another close one like that."

Phelps will be looking to win for the first time at the U.S. Olympic trials. He got beat by Lochte in the 400 individual medley on Monday, then got edged out again in the semis.

Phelps is the ultimate competitor, hating to lose even the smallest contest. But he knows what's really at stake in Omaha.

"It's about getting spots on the team, that's the only thing," he said. "The most important thing for me is to try and secure a spot, and from here I have 3 to 4 weeks to prepare myself and get some extra training in there. I think it's going to be a lot better than what it is here."

Lochte agreed nothing truly matters until the final.

"We're great racers, we just want to win," he said. "We definitely kicked it in gear the last 50, me and him. We know tomorrow night is going to be a lot faster."

There promises to be plenty of speed in the women's 100 backstroke final.

Seventeen-year-old Missy Franklin was the top qualifier in the semifinals. Her time of 59.06 seconds was less than a second off Gemma Spofforth's world record. Teenagers claimed the next three fastest times, as well: 18-year-old Rachel Bootsma, 17-year-old Olivia Smoliga, and 18-year-old Elizabeth Pelton.

"I love where I'm at right now," said Franklin, the breakout star at last year's world championships and one of the top American hopes for London. "I feel strong, I feel powerful. It's so awesome to feel this way and I'm having a blast. This is what I came here to do."

Natalie Coughlin finds herself in the unexpected role of underdog in her signature event. The two-time defending Olympic champion barely qualified for the final with the seventh-fastest time of 1:00.63. That race came after Coughlin finished seventh in the 100 fly final.

"I was hoping to have a better 100 fly than I did, but you pay for it when you go out too hard like I did," Coughlin said. "After that, I just refocused on the 100 backstroke, knowing all that matters is I get a lane for tomorrow night. We'll see what happens. That's all I can do right now."

Coughlin won't have another event before the 100 back final, like she did Tuesday. She scratched the 200 individual medley, so if she doesn't qualify for London in the backstroke, her only realistic chance left to make the team will be the 100 freestyle.

"Having the morning off to rest and recover and go into that 100 back as fresh as possible will be really important for me," she said.

Olympic champion Rebecca Soni used her patented finishing kick to qualify fastest for the 100 breaststroke final in 1:05.88, more than a second ahead of world-record holder Jessica Hardy, who was second in 1:06.88.

"I always hold on to that last few yards as my strength," Soni said. "I'm always waiting to kick it into gear. I don't want to do it too early, but it felt good coming home, and I'm looking forward to having that same speed closing tomorrow."

Hardy won the 100 breast at trials four years ago only to lose her spot on the Olympic team because of a failed doping test. She served a one-year ban after an arbitration panel agreed with her contention that a tainted nutritional supplement was to blame for her positive test.

She battled anger and depression during the fight to clear her name.

"This is the first time I felt like I can actually have a happy ending," she said. "I can relax and finally have fun and feel grateful."

Matt Grevers is the favorite in the men's 100 backstroke final on Wednesday, going in with the top semifinal time of 53.10. Lochte had the second-quickest time in prelims, but he dropped out of the semis to focus on his next final against Phelps.

Brendan Hansen capped his comeback with a victory in the 100 breast, earning a spot in his third straight Olympics.

He won in 59.68.

Hansen is relishing having another shot at Japanese star Kosuke Kitajima, who swept both breast events at the last two Olympics and is in Omaha for the trials so he could keep up his training under American coach Dave Salo.

"It's cool that he got to see me swim," Hansen said. "Somewhere deep down, he's got to know I'm the only guy to beat him the last 10 years. That might carry some weight."

Hansen retired from the sport after the Beijing Games, having been disappointed in two straight Olympics. He took silver and bronze in the two breast events at Athens and was shut out of an individual medal in China.

"I don't know if my body language has shown it or not, but this is exactly where I want to be," he said.

"In 2008, I didn't really want to be here anymore, I was kind of worn down by the whole idea. Now I'm just having so much fun with it and I feel like I'm running on borrowed time. I'm just really proud of myself for saying that I was going to come back and then actually come back and be back."

Hansen will be joined on the team by Eric Shanteau, who specializes in the 200 breast but claimed the second spot in the 100 in 1:00.15.

Four years ago, Shanteau beat out Hansen for an individual spot on the team shortly after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. He put off treatment until after the games and has been healthy ever since.

"I've been back and forth with that event for so long," Shanteau said. "It's nice having it all come together when it counts the most."

Dana Vollmer, a gold medalist as a teenager in 2004, missed out on the team four years ago while battling injuries and health problems, but will go to London after her win in the 100 butterfly.

Vollmer was more than a half-second under world-record pace at the turn, but she faded on the return lap. But she had built such a commanding lead that she was a full body length ahead when she touched in 56.50.

Claire Donahue claimed the second spot for London in 57.57.

Also claiming a spot on the Olympic team was Allison Schmitt, who got off to a huge lead in the 400 free and held on to win in 4:02.84. Chloe Sutton earned the second spot in 4:04.18.
