The Iowa caucuses are looming large for Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. Shoring up support with a bit of truth-stretching, the Republican candidates should consider some New Year's resolutions for the rest of election season.
Newt Gingrich: Watch "A Few Good Men" every morning while on the campaign trail
The most memorable exchange of the movie involves Tom Cruise's character demanding the truth. Jack Nicholson's character launches into the inimitable tirade that asserts "You can't handle the truth! ? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom? my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives." Considering that out of 39 PolitiFact ratings, Gingrich only scores three that register as "true," it is clear that subterfuge, deception, trickery and outright dishonesty are part and parcel of this politician's makeup. Watching "A Few Good Men" every morning may serve to quiet the nagging teachings of Roman Catholicism, particularly the catechetic exhortation against spreading falsehoods.
Michele Bachmann: Watch "Thelma & Louise" whenever thinking of becoming a second Sarah Palin
An Aug. 5 Washington Post editorial asserted that candidate Bachmann learned the lessons of a failed Sarah Palin. I am not so sure that I agree. Bachmann's courting of the Tea Party and her well known historical blunders -- John Quincy Adams' elevation to founding father comes to mind -- squarely put her into Palin territory. Watching "Thelma & Louise," particularly the final scene that has the heroines going over the cliff, may have her think twice of playing Geena Davis to Palin's Susan Sarandon.
Rick Perry and Mitt Romney: Read "The Politics of Jesus" before making another campaign ad or stop
Granted, the persona of John Yoder fell into disrepute, but his tome concerning the Christ's politics might come in handy the next time Perry films a campaign ad in the same vein as "Strong." It would also help Romney reconcile his first forays -- as recorded by the Washington Post -- into the deep waters of "religious ornamentation" and related issues. Neither a conservative Pharisee nor a liberal Sadducee -- or a revolutionary zealot for that matter -- the Messiah chose to be a radical non-conformist with a strong pacifist bend and unapologetic intent of breaking down cultural barriers of inequality. Recognizing that Christ would not make a suitable running mate for Perry or Romney can help the latter two to get taken seriously by religious voters.
