Letter: Economy not GOP?s fault

In William Lyons? Dec. 15 letter, he laments congressional partisanship and implies Republicans are responsible ? plus they blocked the magnitude of the Obama stimulus package.

How? Democrats were in complete control of all branches of government when the stimulus was created.

President Roosevelt did engage in modest deficit spending, but realized financial integrity/security means a balanced budget.

Apparently President Obama rejects this fact and believes that overspending and borrowing more money will end a depression. Why did the Great Depression last so long ? 1929 to 1940? How long will the current depression last?

For both, the answer is ? and was ? end federal intervention. The private sector provides jobs and job creation. Excessive regulations and uncertain tax policies prevent this.

How much longer can President Bush be blamed for the current mess?
Warren G. Harding presided over the 1920-21 Depression. He did nothing but cut federal spending. Unemployment went from 11.7 percent to 6.7 percent to a low of 1.8 percent.

Do we really want to repeat the Great Depression but this time on steroids?
Partisanship is a two-way street. A close look will reveal partisan Democrats and President Obama do not want compromise.

It?s either their misguided way or the highway.

91% Into The Abyss

All Critics (74) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (67) | Rotten (7)

Herzog is pursuing no agenda with Into the Abyss, despite his opposition to extreme judicial measures. He's seeking to answer the question of why people kill, especially in a situation such as this where the reason for the murders was so meaningless.

Into the Abyss does what too few documentaries these days do - it gives ample play to all sides of the argument. Herzog allows us to think things through on our own.

Herzog has managed another strange and intriguing look at a culture and the sorts of people it creates - victims, cops and criminals.

Herzog's investigation may not work as an anti-death-penalty editorial, but its findings are undeniably profound.

A disquieting, heartbreaking look at American crime and punishment.

The abyss here isn't capital punishment, the ostensible subject of the film; it's the seemingly unending capacity for causing and enduring pointless misery that humans seem to have.

An eerie, unsettling and slightly macabre attempt to understand the how and why of three senseless murders in 2001 in Texas.

The most memorable image here is the lethal-injection gurney. With its crossbar for the outstretched arms of doomed prisoners, it resembles a padded crucifix -- a ghastly and inelegant parody of a symbol of Christian comfort.

[Herzog] simply means to show us things as they are - and in this corner of Texas, just north of Houston, things are undeniably violent. And mean.

Into the Abyss makes Herzog's point powerfully, without descending to the level of polemic.

Unlike, say, Errol Morris in The Thin Blue Line, Herzog isn't seeking to exonerate anyone or introduce new evidence. He's just there, observing the process as it rolls forward and wondering why.

Herzog unforgettably shows how when you pull tight the straps on men who've lain down to die, it leaves a mark.

This is the abyss the film shows, the frightening arbitrariness of the death penalty. People are born into poverty and violence by chance, and their fates -- as crime victims or victims of the state -- are also functions of chance.

The director's ability to objectively pursue this line of inquiry makes Into the Abyss a compelling, revealing work of art.

Herzog's death-row documentary hits hard

The overriding point of Into the Abyss, what keeps this sad, sorrowful film from becoming depressing and elevates it far above the usual chatter of liberal-conservative debate, is that there can be light on the other end of even the darkest of tunnels.

Herzog asks, in that probing yet gentle, meditative voice we've come to cherish, "What does it mean?" Oh, Werner. We don't ask such things in 'Merica.

Covers much the same ground as other death row movies, but with the Herzog difference.

Comes close to the voyeurism of Nick Broomfield's documentaries on Aileen Wuornos but is saved by Herzog's obviously deep conviction that capital punishment is evil.

"Into the Abyss" makes a strong case for the inhumanity of capital punishment, regardless of the crime or the criminal.

[Herzog's] piercing gaze provides a tightly focused look at the realities underlying our nation's continued reliance on this archaic tool of criminal justice.

The interviews that make up the balance of the film yield plenty of oddities of modern American life.

NFL Week 16: Cleveland Browns (4-10) at Baltimore Ravens (10-4)

It?s pretty simple for the Baltimore Ravens right now: Win their final two games and they will be the AFC?s No. 2 overall seed and get a first-round bye.

However, Baltimore will have to do so without top receiver Anquan Boldin. He had surgery on his knee Thursday and will miss the final two games ? the team is expecting him back for the playoffs, but that first-round bye would surely help. The 31-year-old Boldin has 57 receptions for 887 yards and three touchdowns this year.

Boldin has produced three touchdowns and two 100-yard games this season. His 57 receptions and three touchdowns are his fewest since 2004. Over the past six games, Boldin has averaged 43.3 yards receiving. Rookie receiver Torrey Smith has averaged more receiving yards during that time (62.2). With Boldin sidelined, Smith and Lee Evans are expected to start for Baltimore.

Cleveland again starts Seneca Wallace at QB ahead of Colt McCoy, who is still dealing with post-concussion symptoms. Wallace?s one start against the Ravens came in the team?s most recent trip to Baltimore on Sept. 26, 2010. He threw for 141 yards and a TD in a 24-17 defeat, while counterpart Joe Flacco passed for three touchdowns.

The Browns? offense is somewhat conservative and averages only 294.6 total yards per contest. The Ravens can be stingy, yielding 90.0 yards per contest against the run. Look for Browns coach Pat Shurmur to throw more play-action passes to loosen up Baltimore?s third-ranked defense, which yields only 287.9 yards per game.

The Ravens have won seven straight over the Browns, tied for the longest win streak against an opponent in team history. They?ve also won seven consecutive games over the New York Jets.? Baltimore?s latest victory in the series came Dec. 4 as Ray Rice ran for a career-high 204 yards in a 24-10 win. Ricky Williams added 76 yards rushing as the Ravens piled up 290 on the ground.

If the Ravens don?t get pass pressure, they are as vulnerable as any defense. In their four losses, they have registered only five sacks. Ravens star Terrell Suggs was kept fairly at bay in the first meeting, netting only one sack. His 13 lead the AFC and tie for fifth in the NFL.

New non-GMO 'super' broccoli contains extra cancer-fighting ...

(NaturalNews) British scientists have developed a new variety of broccoli that contains up to three times more of a powerful heart-health nutrient than conventional varieties -- and they did so without the use of genetic modification (GM). However, the "super" broccoli, known as "Beneforte," also contains less vital sulfur than conventional varieties.

By cross-breeding traditional British broccoli with wild, bitter Sicilian broccoli, researchers from the Institute for Food Research and the John Innes Centre, both in Norwich, England, were able to produce the Beneforte variety, which contains up to three times the normal amount of glucoraphanin (GRP).

GRP is a precursor to sulforaphane (SF), which is the actual nutrient responsible for providing anticancer, anti-diabetic, and antimicrobial benefits. GRP in its standalone form provides little, if any, health benefits, and must come into contact with myrosinase (MYR), another enzyme naturally present in broccoli, in order to become metabolized into beneficial SF.

The Beneforte scientists, however, claim the extra GRP in their broccoli helps to improve the breakdown down of fat in the body, and prevent it from building up in arteries and causing heart disease. They also say that eating Beneforte helps to reduce cholesterol levels, and are currently conducting human studies to verify these claims.

"There's a lot of circumstantial evidence that points to (glucoraphanin and related compounds) as the most important preventive agents for (heart attacks) and certain cancers," Lars Ove Dragsted, a professor at the University of Copenhagen's department of human nutrition, is quoted as saying by USA Today

Since it is not GM, Beneforte is unlikely to have any negative side effects. After all, many non-GM fruits and vegetables sold in stores today are hybridized. However, unless there is extra MYR in Beneforte along with the extra GRP, it is unclear whether this so-called "super" variety of broccoli is any more beneficial to health than standard varieties.

Beneforte was introduced in the UK last month, and has been available in select stores in California and Texas for roughly the past year. And within the next couple of weeks, it is set to be introduced in stores across the US.
