Where design and technology meet

This article originally appeared on Imprint.

ImprintWhere do technology and design intersect? Increasing numbers of people say on Broadway between 20th and 21st Streets.

I first read about General Assembly in a column buried on an inside page of the New York Times' real estate section. It was presented as a place for technology and design entrepreneurs to rent desk space and get access to a library, conference and classroom spaces, lounge, and kitchen with free-trade coffee.

Over the past six months, GA -- developed by recent Ivy League graduates Adam Pritzker, Matthew Brimer, Brad Hargreaves and Jake Schwartz -- has established itself as more than a superior alternative to plugging in at a Starbucks. It's become an in-demand meeting place, learning center and business incubator.

GA's 16,000-square-foot space on the fourth floor of a Flatiron district office building is a cross between the coolest shared office space ever, a membership club, and a college campus, the metaphor preferred by the founders. Indeed, the "campus map," above, which is a giant mural on the wall opposite the elevators, lists its key activities including concepting, convening, coworking, decision making, designing, fireside chatting, hackathoning, pitching, reading and relaxing, serendipitous conversing, shaping best practices, whiteboarding and workshopping.

"The space was designed to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs," says Mimi O. Chun, General Assembly's design director, an AIGA/NY board member who formerly was lead designer in IDEO's NY office "We think of ourselves as a community of people who are passionate about technology and design. There are opportunities for shared learning, discussions, events and classes, most in the evening so you can keep your day job and augment your education without committing to a full- or part-time graduate program."

"There are many different ways to engage here," Chun adds. "We believe that a multidisciplinary approach often yields the best outcomes, so we offer classes that help non-designers understand how design can impact their products, as well as classes that help designers increase their understanding of technology and entrepreneurship."

There are several different membership levels. Sixteen start-up teams that were selected though an application process are currently based in two dedicated work areas; the companies include a personalized daily deal site, a crowdsourced fashion site, and a kind of Pandora for the fine arts, a high-end marketplace where you're offered personal recommendations based on tastes and preferences. Developers of other start-ups work in the big communal space, which offers comfy sofas, a long beverage-snack bar, and an even longer table where people can either tune into their own electronics or collaborate and interact. There's a long waiting list for the options mentioned in the Times column: $600 a month desk spaces and $300 a month 24-hour access membership, which includes discounts on classes.

Three or four classes -- open to members and the public on an ? la carte basis -- are held every night; you can subscribe and get a weekly e-mail with listings. Class subjects range from fundraising and legal issues for start-ups to more esoteric topics like "Introduction to iOS Development," that is, writing code for Apple devices, and "Feedback Loops," which is about using social incentives to acquire and engage players of online games.

On the past two Thursday evenings I was at the table in the "Breaking Creative Barriers in Design" workshop taught by 2006 Pratt interactive media graduate Adrian Cabrero, at head of table above. My fellow students included an architect who's developing a shopping site for small-town businesses; the founder of a website design and analysis consultancy; a young woman who's fine-tuning an online store for handmade jewelry; and the developer of an ambitious online tool to help high school teachers and students keep track of their schedules and assignments.

The class gave each of us the opportunity to have our ideas critiqued by a cohort of peers. I brought to the table (and whiteboard, actually the whole wall) a brand identity I'm working on for Tourbie, a site that offers personalized travel experiences. Not surprisingly, I got pushed out of my "too corporate" comfort zone into friendlier territory inhabited by dogs, bunnies, and magic carpets.? And I realized that in my career I'd always been either an employee or a boss, neither of which truly afforded the opportunity for the kind of deep, honest interaction with knowledgeable and trustworthy peers I got at GA.

To make its programming accessible to a broad audience, GA offers free events that require only an RSVP, including a? "Reinvent NYC Hackathon" coming up this weekend. If you sign up, you'll get to spend two days with teams of local developers designing and launching your vision for the official New York City government site.

7 Sales Management Training Tips for the administration of "I'm ...

Prospects lose interest in your step for many reasons. So, before you do that, use it to meet people from even higher level in order to generate interest.

1st your attitude must always be, "Get the leaders." An interesting perspective, does not mean much if you have not spoken with the leaders. People can be useful, but do not expect your offer to sell their heads. it requires effort and the risk of a dubious reward for them.

212.11 Volunteer to Walk Dogs for Austin Pets Alive

Dog Friendly, Family Friendly, Free things to do in Austin, Outside, Things To Do In Austin | 1 Aug 2011

Austin Pets Alive is always looking for volunteers for different activities, but I think dog walking is one of the easiest and definitely one of my favorites. It?s a great way to get a workout and pitch in for a great cause at the same time! Having my own dog, I know how much they love that time every day, so helping dogs at the shelter just seems like a win-win situation for everyone!

I thought I would get the word out about this easy and fun volunteer opportunity now, because the next new volunteer orientation is this Saturday at the Texas School for the Deaf.

China lawyers 'told not to take rail crash cases' (AFP)

BEIJING (AFP) ? Legal authorities in China ordered lawyers not to take on cases from the families of victims of last weekend's fatal train crash, it emerged Saturday, as judicial officials apologised for the move.

Three days after the crash near Wenzhou in eastern China, law firms in the city received an "urgent statement" in the names of the Wenzhou Judicial Bureau and the Wenzhou Lawyers' Association, the official Xinhua news agency said Saturday.

The statement said lawyers should report to the two organisations "immediately after the injured passengers and families of the deceased in the accident come for legal help," the agency reported.

Xinhua said the statement also told lawyers not to "unauthorisedly respond and handle the cases," because "the accident is a major sensitive issue concerning social stability".

Forty people were killed when two high-speed trains collided last Saturday on the outskirts of Wenzhou, the worst accident yet to hit China's rapidly expanding high-speed network, now the biggest in the world only four years after it opened.

The accident has raised questions over whether safety concerns may have been overlooked in the rush to expand the network, and China's state-controlled media has been unusually outspoken in its coverage of the accident, defying directives not to question the official line.

There has been widespread criticism of the government's handling of the accident and its aftermath in Chinese media and online, and the instructions to lawyers prompted an angry response when they were publicised by web users.

"The judicial authorities and the lawyers' association in Wenzhou have banned lawyers from taking victims' cases. Who are they working for? I'm having doubts about the independence of Chinese justice," wrote one web user, Dianfuzishangwudeguairen, on the Sina microblog service.

The Wenzhou Judicial Bureau apologised for the statement, which it said the lawyers' group had issued without its approval.

"We didn't know the content of the statement before it was released. It was written by the lawyers' association, which used our name without authorisation," Liu Xianping, director of the bureau's office, said in remarks quoted by Xinhua.

A Wenzhou Lawyers' Association spokesman confirmed this version of events, Xinhua said, adding that they issued the order because they feared "conflicts would be generated if legal services are not well-provided".

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has ordered an "open and transparent" probe into the crash and said those responsible would be "severely punished".

Rail officials have admitted the Chinese-made signalling system was to blame and the company that built it has apologised.

Amateur video posted online has shown bulldozers pushing the wreckage of carriages into a ditch. On other clips, web-users say they can see one or two corpses falling to the ground at the same time as a carriage left hanging at the crash site is deliberately toppled over.

On Friday evening the railways ministry said that the carriages had to be pushed off the viaduct for rescue operation purposes, and no evidence had been lost as a result.

But the footage has done nothing to ease criticism, particularly as a two-year-old girl was found alive in the wreckage 21 hours after the accident, long after rescue operations had been declared over.

Wen's own trip to the site five days after the crash raised further questions, when he said that his visit had been delayed because he had been in bed sick for more than a week -- a highly unusual admission in China, where the health of top leaders is considered a state secret.

Photographs on the central government website of Wen meeting a Japanese delegation the day after the crash appeared to contradict his claim, and analysts suggest leaders may have disagreed over how to handle the disaster.
